Shelita Renee Augustus proudly represents both Galileo and George Washington High School in Danville, Virginia. Her remarkable journey led her to Norfolk State University (NSU), where she earned her B.S. in Chemistry in May 2020. Throughout her academic career, Shelita had the incredible privilege of participating in invaluable research experiences funded by renowned organizations such as the Department of Defense (DOD), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Driven by her passion for scientific exploration, Shelita pursued Materials Science and Engineering at Norfolk State University, where she made history as the first recipient of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science Employer (GEM) Fellowship, sponsored by NASA. She further distinguished herself by securing a coveted position in the Pathways Engineering Trainee program at NASA's Johnson Space Center, where she deepened her commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery.
Currently, Shelita is pursuing her Ph.D. and serving as a graduate research assistant at The College of William & Mary for Applied Science. Her dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM is evident through her participation in the 2022-2023 White House scholar cohort for the White House Initiative for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Additionally, Shelita actively contributes as a student liaison for the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, as well as an outreach specialist for the Institute for Broadening Participation. These organizations share Shelita's unwavering mission to expand minority participation and accessibility in STEM education.
Guided by her favorite motto, "Reach BEYOND the stars!", Shelita consistently demonstrates exceptional communication skills and a remarkable ability to foster meaningful relationships with stakeholders. Her steadfast determination inspires her colleagues to tackle complex challenges and achieve remarkable outcomes. With glowing recommendations and an outstanding academic track record, Shelita brings a wealth of experience in technical research, administration, and science communication to everything she undertakes.
